One of the key strategies in the on-site management of fatigue is minimising every individual’s potential for fatigue through developing individual fatigue management plans. The objective is to help individuals to assess and improve upon the quality of their sleep and their alertness – especially when working at night – and develop an effective routine to initiate and sustain sleep when sleeping during the day.
EOH offers a wellness programme that assists organisations in developing and implementing an effective fatigue management plan. Its main purpose is to control the risk of fatigue in operations.
The plan’s approach to risk management involves identifying the likely causes of fatigue on site, assessing the resultant risk, implementing effective risk-control measures, and regularly monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of these controls.
The development of fatigue management plans begins with training. Initial training is conducted in groups of 20 and takes approximately six to seven hours. It takes the form of an educational programme that covers general information on circadian rhythms, the nature of sleep, sleep hygiene and alertness management, as well as a range of assessments that enables each participant to build an individual fatigue profile. The assessments are completed through an anonymous survey, which enables us to analyse the main issues causing fatigue in the workplace.
The initial training culminates in feedback on the survey data, which indicates the causes of fatigue on site, such as individual sleep and self-management issues. It also helps each person to prepare an individual fatigue management plan.
The fatigue management plans focus on self-management through sleep improvement and lifestyle management, such as more exercise and stopping smoking. It encompasses training employees in sleep preparation, from thinking control to relaxation strategies, help for individual sleeping problems through sleep studies and stress counselling, the management of alertness and a written commitment to take specific actions.
